Would You Pay $100K for an Hermes Tee?

We’re used to unknown or first mover brands employing OTT moves—most expensive/gold plated/ diamond encrusted—to garner some publicity, but we never imagined that the priciest t-shirt known to mankind (ladies you’re safe) would belong to luxury retail brand Hermes.
We can grant that the brand is extremely high-end, and also that the t-shirt in question is made of exotic crocodile leather, but $91,500 for the t shirt on your back? Seriously?
Now The Awl was the first to come across this extravagance in the brand’s Madison Avenue (New York City) store, but on digging deeper we discovered that the t-shirt’s not the only one of its kind.
In fact, Hermes’ entire chiffon crocodile range is motioned to give you a heart attack with price tags ranging between $60k-$100k.
And while there are many takers for crocodile and alligator skin accessories given the luxurious finish it lends, this might be more akin to fur coats that have PETA scowling at celebrities.
If you care to see what the fuss is about, here’s a video of Hermes’ Paris showing of the brand’s Spring-Summer Menswear 2013. The t-shirt creating the stir can be seen from 1.03-1.09 minutes.
