The Big Fat Wedding Diary
Baraatis jiving to Spanish folk drums, a lavish spread put together by the Michelin-star chef Sergi Arola, a 60-kilo wedding cake, a banquet that resembled a seabed, choppers for bird’s-eye view pictures of the ceremony and thousands of balloons were what the proud Mittal papa splurged on. The event saw Catalonian President Artur Mas and his wife in attendance, besides a host of other dignitaries. The Spanish tourism board had literally laid out the red carpet for the industrial family once they expressed a desire to host the wedding in the city.
However, the extravagance has not gone down well with a section of Catalonians and tourists who were reportedly inconvenienced because, for the first time in history, the national monuments were closed to the public to accommodate the Indian affair. Some sections of the media even quoted politicians and prominent citizens trashing the whole affair as “obscene display of wealth,” for which their ‘National pride was on sale.’
Even if Pramod and his brother Laxmi do not see eye to eye, they do seem to share a passion for extravagant family weddings. In 2002, Laxmi set the bar when he took over the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta to host his son’s wedding. Kolkata and the rest of the country erupted in protests over how the Left Government had sold out the historic site and pride of the City to the Mittals for an estimated ‘rent’ of Rs 9 lakh. Since then, the Mittal brothers have outdone themselves on every occasion, despite the voices of dissent.
