Spanish Beer Estrella Damm Lands in India in Time for Christmas
Spanish beer Estrella Damm hits Indian shores
Contrary to what religious factions may want you to believe, there is a new star rising in the East this Xmas. Estrella Damm, the famous beer from Barcelona has recently landed in India and the response for this chilled glass of goodness has been, ironically yet aptly, warm.
For now, the beer will mostly be seen in hotels and fine-dine restaurants, but gradually as it catches on, it is sure to find its way into broader retail. That said, the beer is available through select retail in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Goa, and Pune. The retail price (for 350ml) is Rs 170 in Delhi and Rs 240 in Mumbai so it is a premium beer for most parts.
So what does one hope to taste for such money: a lot, frankly. The Estrella Damm Barcelona has clean and intense aromas, with a bitter and refreshing finish. Alcohol content: 5.4%
Even more exciting is the Estrella Damm Inedit that has also made its way to the shelves. This special beer was developed in collaboration with the famed proponent of molecular gastronomy, Chef Ferran Adria (of El Bulli fame).
Inedit was crafted to complement food usually considered a challenge in terms of culinary pairings like salads, vinegar-based sauces, bitter notes such as asparagus and artichokes, fatty and oily fish, and citrus. After a year and a half, and 400 beer trials, Adria and the sommeliers at El Bulli had created a beer that was smooth, lightly effervescent and creamy on the palate, which paired well with all cuisines. But don’t take my word for it, go try it, that is, once you have convinced yourself to cough up a whopping Rs 1,200 for a 750ml bottle in Mumbai. Delhi folk have it easier at Rs 750 for a bottle.
