You Need to Hear What Meryl Streep Said

By Posted Jan 9th 2017

At the Golden Globes held last evening, Meryl Streep made some poignant points the world desperately need to hear. Celebrating Hollywood’s diversity while slamming US President-elect Donald Trump for his insensitive mocking of a disabled reporter, Meryl walked off that stage with much more than just her award.

“Disrespect invites disrespect; violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” said Streep as she took to the stage for accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement. She began on a note that spoke of Hollywood’s diversity, highlighting how the industry is “crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if you kick us all out, you’ll have nothing to watch except for football and mixed martial arts.” She followed it up with making her displeasure over Trump’s misconduct, during his one of rallies, evident. She urged the media to hold people in power accountable.

What made her speech so gracefully explosive was the fact that Meryl took Trump down without uttering his name. Now that’s what conviction sounds like. She raised points we, as the world, need to hear amidst this political conundrum we’re living in. More power to her!
