Having carved a niche within a hallowed group of world-renowned Indian contemporary artists, Jitish Kallat continues to go places. The latest stamp on his passport (acquired only yesterday), can be credited to the inaugural edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, where Kallat’s sculptural installation titled Circa will be shown from May 22 to May 26.
Mumbai’s art enthusiasts have received a preview — when Circa was first displayed at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in 2011 — but in Hong Kong, Kallat will receive more than just applause for his work. On May 24, Australian association Asialink is scheduled to launch a book commemorating his latest to an audience of aficionados.
We have learned that Kallat’s installation finds its inspiration in a bamboo scaffolding pole; commonplace in our constantly evolving metropolis. The clever collective display of 120 decorative resin poles that is garnering attention from halfway across the world is, however, no modest feat.
