Car Review: Zooming Around Mumbai in a Jaguar XF 2.0 Petrol

By Posted Jul 22nd 2015

One glance at our ride is all it took for us to be certain that red hearts will be banished from our lives as symbols of love. For there is nothing that symbolises love better than a spectrum blue 2.0 petrol Jaguar XF. Undoubtedly the most handsome saloon zooming around in the country, if you’re driving around in a Jaguar XF make sure you know how to respond to curious glances with panache; for it wields power and commands respect when it gets onto the streets. With that stylish coupe silhouette and an impressive grille, one can’t really blame people for turning on their heels to peek at the car. Alas, we only gloated with pride as we drove out of the Jaguar Land Rover showroom in a tiny south Mumbai neighbourhood.

The Jaguar Experience:

The Jaguar XF experience begins with the unique Jaguar ‘handshake’ that occurs when you push-start the engine to life and the rotating gear selector rises elegantly under your palm from the centre console. The automated AC vents that flaunt ‘Jaguar’ on what looks like chrome-plated badges comply and open up in perfect sync. At every nook and with every feature the XF oozes sophistication and luxury, and it seems like Jaguar has ensured you never forget the handsome beast whose wheels you’re at.

Now, those who have driven on Mumbai’s traffic-clogged and pothole-ridden roads would vouch that it isn’t really a welcome experience to manoeuvre around during peak hours. However, the Jaguar XF offers you a whole new experience. Thanks to the broad 17-inch 235/55 R17 tyres, you will hardly feel a bump even on the most uneven of surfaces.

Under its hood is a 2.0 petrol engine; and, the downsizing it has undergone in comparison to its successors is no setback to this mean machine. The four-cylinder, 1999cc turbo-petrol engine is just what you need for Indian roads. Exerting 237bhp and 340Nm of torque, the XF’s rear wheels are powered by an 8-speed gearbox. While the equally powered regular drive mode is just apt to give you the real ‘Jaguar’ feel, those with pumped adrenaline and a need for speed can switch to the Sports mode on an empty highway and experience the vehicle in its full glory.

With the power to zoom from 0 to 100kph in a matter of just 7.9 seconds, we were left impressed at the capabilities of the petrol engine that pulls along this 2240 kg sedan. Even at high speeds on patchy roads, the Jag cuts the air like a hot knife through butter.  To those who are otherwise tuned to driving smaller utility vehicles, the Jaguar XF may seem tad heavy initially. However, to us, at the end of our four-hour ride the XF felt like home. So home-like is the set up, it hardly intimidates. It does, however, compel you to fall in love. All it needs is a light push on the accelerator and you will witness the XF leap, just like the iconic leaping Jaguar crafted on its booty.

Interior:

The interiors of the XF promise to please you as much as the exterior. Decked in Bond grain leather with hints of exquisite real wood veneers, there’s something so easy about its dashboard and console that even a first-timer won’t be left intimidated by the XF; a quality most luxury cars fail at.

Apart from Dual Zone Automatic Climate Control, which allows the setting of different temperatures for the different vents facing the driver’s seat and the passenger seat, the XF also allows Bluetooth audio streaming. Another feature that really caught our fancy was the valet lock. With this feature you needn’t worry about leaving behind valuables in your car when you hand it over at valet parking. All you need to do is lock your dashboard, music system and boot space by entering a secret code at the touch of button and get on with your business without a worry in the world.

Additionally, the navigation system is tuned to navigate you throughout India with utmost ease. The phosphor blue halo illumination and interior mood lighting, the interior yellow touch lights and 250W sound system only added magic to our Jaguar experience.

Our Verdict:

Without an iota of exaggeration, we can say that the experience that the Jaguar XF lets you have is one that is certainly worth more than the money you pay for it. The price at which you can own this beauty is miniscule compared to the almost boundless luxuries it offers. Be it congested city roads or an open highway, the Jaguar XF, we promise, will not disappoint you for a minute. With the XF, all you need is a push to chase your dreams!
