Berlin-based Anselm Reyle shot to fame in late 2007, when his stripe paintings sold for six figure sums, even as works by Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst remained unsold.

Earlier that year, the artist's profile received a boost when a purple foil-in-Plexiglas box sold for $192,000 at auction in London.

Reyle, whose works are characterised by bold brushwork, neon paint, 80s kitsch and silver foil, and has found his works in the collections of people like Charles Saatchi and Gucci Group chief Francois Pinault, has also showcased his work at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, the Gagosian in New York, Tate Modern in London.

Now the contemporary artist is all set to showcase is abstract work in Mumbai. As he prepares for his first solo exhibition in the country, Reyle talks to us about art and his recent collaboration with Christain Dior. He created a limited edition line of accessories for their first pop-up store in Miami this year. Here are edited excerpt from the interview:

Have you been to Mumbai before? What is your impression of the city?

Anselm Reyle

It will be my first time that I am in India. I haven't had much contact with this country, except for when I was a child - some family friends here in Germany were Indian. Of course, I know Bollywood films, which have become quite popular in Germany.  I am looking forward to seeing if real life is reflected in any way in the films.

Can you give us a brief overview of what we can expect to see at your show here?

Anselm Reyle

Besides the foil Plexiglas boxes I will also be exhibiting a few of my paint by number series and also two sculptures.

Chelna Khatau

Are you familiar with the works of any contemporary/modern Indian artists?

Anselm Reyle

Unfortunately I do not know so much about the country itself, nor about the art market there. Nevertheless, I imagine that certain structures are similar all over the world.

You were recently in the news for your collaboration with Dior. How did that association come about?

Anselm Reyle

When Dior contacted me, I first had to think about it. However, soon I thought it would be interesting to work with them on a cooperative project. I was surprised to find that such a big fashion label develops ideas in a similar way to an artist in the studio, for instance, by using a pair of scissors, glue and tape. I really liked that.

Where did you draw inspiration from, for the Dior collection?

Anselm Reyle

Usually, I work with found objects, slightly modifying them and transform them into art. When I looked at Dior's eminent cannage pattern, I realised that my found object is actually lying in front of me. So I tilted it across the surface of the bag and thus deconstructing it.

Anselm Reyle's Indian Mylar Vision exhibition will be on from December 16 at Galerie Isa, 132, Great Western Building, 1st Floor, SBS Road, Opp. Lion Gate Clock Tower, Fort, Mumbai 400 023.
